It was a great summer back in the States. Our days were full of friends, fellowship and fun; but now we are back and ready to roll on into the new year. After a late landing and a long transition from Hong Kong Airport to our new apartment in Shekou, the first working day came quickly. Our first day off came early as well, as we had to close school down because of the effects that Typhoon Utor threw our way, No worries though, that was Wednesday and the students came in on Thursday bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for the new year and excited to see all their friends they were missing over summer.
At the beginning of the year, as any international school knows, there are many emotions flowing through the body of this dynamic, ever changing community. Some close friends may have departed for another land, a favorite teacher could be in some other part of the world and there always seems to be a couple of new faces that smile nervously as they trek to a dot on the map of a school. Regardless of all the changes, a school is a school, an education forum for students to grow, learn and socialize.
I am truly excited about this year. It may be only my seventh year of teaching, but I feel like I have gained so much more than that from my colleagues. I have been very privileged to work with educators that continue to pursue their own education in order to better our students. Professional development is so important to keep the flame burning, mind turning and discussions happening. As I sit here with people like @AndreaJarr and Rebecca O'Brien (@B3CC4BU) talking about cross curricular assignments we could get our students to do and tech dudes like Marty Ruthaivilavan (@mmruthai) and @J0hnBurns to see where I can integrate technology in order to not just supplement the material but to redefine the way it is taught. #SISRocks truly does rock and I can't wait to share more about my own developments this year!
The best way for myself to achieve a goal is finding an accountability partner. My goal this year is to at least post on my blog four times a month. Drop me a message if I slip and I'll get back on it! Subjects to come could be about @Polar Watches, @CoachsEye and @Edmodo. If you have some suggestions as well I am willing to venture out.
