Making FITT Kids in PE

1/13/2014

As an international teacher, I have found that students benefit from knowing and implementing fitness concepts into their daily lives. Fitness concepts are important to understand, because generally students engage in PE classes every other day. As their educator, it is very personal to me to want every student that leaves my class to understand HOW and WHY being active OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL is beneficial. By having my students choose FITT goals, they are given the opportunity to challenge their physical fitness in ways outside of my direct instruction.

The are three fitness tests that give students their current level of fitness: push-ups, sit-ups and a 12-minute Cooper run. Push-ups and sit-ups are done until exhaustion with the FitnessGram track. At the end of each test, students know what they have achieved. The 12-minute Cooper run is similar; it's a cardiorespiratory test meant for students to run as far as they can in 12 minutes. Similarly, at the end they have a concrete number so they can see what they have achieved. During our next 8 weeks, students will be working out during AND outside of class to strive for a higher score!

We just recently had our second test of the semester and I couldn't be more PROUD about the progress my students have made. 80% of them increased their scores by over 15% on EVERY test. 100% of them increased at least one of their scores! As a educator, it shows me their progress from work they are doing outside of class.

Soon, I will be launching my TOP TEN lists of INDIVIDUAL students who have performed the best for each test, as well as next semester's top percentage gained by each TEAM. Check in on my website, and I'll keep you posted!

Stay Active, Be Healthy!

Cricket Anyone?

In my PE class I LOVE doing as many sports as possible. Giving the students the opportunity to learn about different cultures and what kinds of activities are popular within them can benefit them far past the classroom. For that reason we are currently we are brushing up on our cricket skills. Some of the students asked if there was a video they could watch to give them a big picture visual of the modified game we play in PE. After scouring the internet I found these two videos that do a fantastic job of breaking down the essentials of cricket. There are many more kinds of modified cricket games you can play, but for the time being enjoy the videos!
From my understanding this video was done by a couple of IB students. What a great way to display your knowledge and technical skills.

Makes me think about asking some of my own students to utilize the technology we have and their skills to create a couple more movies about the activities we perform in PE!

Looking for some CASH to get you into that next race we have been talking about?

I have always been a big fan of Chocolate Milk after a work out. It is packed with the right combination of protein and carbohydrates! These two nutrients are a one, two punch making sure your body can recover, recharge and grow! I sometimes put a little bit of extra protein in a 12-16 oz jug of chocolate milk, but to each their own. Regardless, the research promoting the intake of chocolate milk and the benefits you gain from it after a work out are out there and growing. Don't take my word for it. Have a gander at REFUEL with Chocolate Milk.

Now, on to the money. They are looking for people like YOU to sponsor. Say you need a couple of extra bucks for that race you were thinking of doing. Maybe your team needs a pit of and entrance money into that next tournament. If you turn to CHOCOLATE MILK instead of that "other stuff" for your post workout drink, you might just raise that money faster than you'd hoped! Have a GO, remember, "YOU NEVER GET WHAT YOU DON'T ASK FOR!"

Book it, Work for it, Commit to it! Time to CURE the "SOMEDAY" disease!

Whether you are a student, teacher, parent or dog I challenge YOU!

Discussing goal setting and physical exercise in my health class at HCS the topic came up, "What are some things I can do other than the USUAL?" I light up with delight when questions like this come up. Pushing yourself is not generally the "norm." When people ask what they can do in order to make themselves better I get kind of GIDDY!

I found myself getting lost in the question and began side tracking from my lesson plan to talk about the many kinds of races students could sign up for and participate in. I told them, "think of it as a fitness goal." I carried on, "do you remember talking about the SMART goals earlier this year?" Here is your chance to commit yourself and fulfill an exercise goal. JUST BOOK IT, just get on the website and sign up for the next 5K, 10K, or some other running race maybe try a cycling options regardless of what it is commit to it and train for it. Set small goals for yourself and you can accomplish one thing at a time!

I broke into talking about some of the specialized races people are starting to come up with. The passion in some of these students eyes blew past me and into their future thinking about the ZOMBIE race, SPARTAN race, and URBANATHLON presented by Men's Health. These are only some many races that you can do to have a little bit more fun with fitness.

****ADDED 3/7/2012
There were a couple of races I did not mention that I came across throughout the week. Along with the "specialized races" above you could also look into THE TOUGH MUDDER and the WARRIOR DASH. Good luck and leave me some feedback if you do decide to sign up and race on ANY of the events I have mentioned!****

The whole rant that I have been on here comes down to one thing...GET ACTIVE! Whether you are the parent, teacher, student or even a really uber intelligent dog who reads blogs, you could be the catalyst to making someone in your life more healthy. Statistics continue to show how a healthy diet and activity of any sort contributes to longevity of life. How much more time do you want to spend with you family and friend, how much more time do you want enjoying life, being healthy and taking in all of the beautiful scenes this world has to offer!

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU:

Check out some of these sites and make a COMMITMENT!
