#NeedSleep #LifeHack

Woke up today and was about to reach for the snooze button but I remember reading that, quite honestly, the snooze button is not going to do anything for you at this point. The Snooze button is a psychological crutch that is leaving you more groggy and in a worse state every time you press it. Here are some key facts to remember about sleep!

First:
Sleep varies by age so the following are numbers from the National Sleep Foundation are a good rule of thumb, but depending on genetics, age, exhaustion level and other independent factors, these are the most current numbers: 
  • Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)
  • Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)
  • Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)
  • School age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)
  • Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)
  • Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)
  • Adults (26-64): Sleep range did not change and remains 7-9 hours
  • Older adults (65+): Sleep range is 7-8 hours (new age category)
Sleep Hack: Rather than hitting your snooze button in the morning you should be setting a bedtime reminder that is dependent on your wake up time. Better yet, find a consistent time to get to bed and TRAIN your body when to sleep!

Second:

Understand that by not getting enough sleep you are exposing yourself to a greater risk of negative health consequences. Sleep occurs in cycles and is one of the most important things you can do for your body everyday. Through rapid eye movement (REM) and deep sleep cycles, your brain organizes your days activities and allows your body to get the rest it needs in order to function. Recent studies have shown that the organization cycle happens closer to the END of your overall rest time, which means your processing yesterday moments before you begin today! Consequently, if you are waking up too early in the middle of this cycle you're not getting the process time you need which research has shown cuts into your mental sharpness for the remainder of the day.
Sleep Hack: Wake up as natural as possible. Use an eye mask during the summer months so the sun doesn't dictate when you awake. Don't startle yourself awake by loud noises, have a soft sound that gradually wakes you in the morning. This also means, if you wake up before your alarm, it's time to get up, your body is ready to go!

Third:
You have tried to get enough sleep, you've practiced healthy habits mentioned above and the tiredness still sets in halfway through the day, it's time to learn from other cultures. Take a siesta, 20 minutes or so in the middle of the day have been associated with a decrease in coronary mortality and is literally built into our biological rhythms of sleep. Research tracking thousands of subjects' sleep habits continue to show evidence the body is in need of rest during the mid-afternoon, and to strengthen their research it's not just those who did not get enough sleep the night before, it's innate in EVERYONE! You might have also heard that a mid-afternoon nap spawns from a large meal and the bodies need energy to process but other students negate that as well, all persons had the same dip in brain activity whether they had lunch or not. 
Sleep Hack: Know where you can get a quick nap in. Don't spend your precious nap time catching up on shows or reading the sports blog, get to your nap spot and get that 20 minutes you deserve. Trust me, you'll be much more productive. If George Costanza knew it to be true, how have you not yet seen the light?

#iPEC, my #AMPedSIS Project

If I have ever had the pleasure of meeting you, you may have recognized that I LOVE to talk and interact with people. Finding out somone's passion is one of the most entertaining parts of a conversation. The next time you are talking with someone whether you have met them for the first time of knew them since first grade, try and find out what their new #PassionProject is. You'll know you've found it when you see a new depth in their eyes, you watch their face light up and after what seems like 10 minutes of conversation you check your watch and realize an hour has passed.

Here at #SISrocks I am fortunate enough to be a part of a school that nurtures passion and innovation. Recently 
@mmruthai and our very driven eCoach team put on a showcase where students and teachers alike got to share out their AMPed Projects. The work that has gone into it was amazing and so were the results, please have a look at what they are doing!

Enter my AMPed project. This is officially the first time I am writing about it, but it has been over a year in the making with future date in mind. As an international teacher, I wanted to create an opportunity for #physed teachers to get together to share, interact and learn. With that being said, I created iPEC, a conference catered to physical educators of all types. With four strands in mind, my goal is to unite like minded educators and share best practices, pedagogy or anything else.

Too busy to blog? Me too!

It has taken me WAY to long to realize this, but half the time I want to write a blog about some cool thing my class and I are studying about I NEVER get it done. As a teacher it can be so difficult to keep up with a blogging life and creating lessons that will push the boundaries of our students understanding of specific content. To put it in short, I spend A LOT of time creating content on each assignment I hand out. 

Segway into this blogs purpose. I want to share with the world, but I'll take whomever is listening at the moment, ALL of my creative content when it comes to Life Skills (some schools call it Health). Recently in both my 6th Grade and 10th Grade Life Skills classes at #SISrocks, we have been talking about nutrition, and even more specifically the role of apps and wearables in everyday life. This assignment was created for my 6th graders where they essentially recorded 2 weeks of food intake and reflected on it. I am still waiting for the results, but have a look at the assignment.

Wearables and Apps in Our Students' Lives

After teaching my students about apps and wearables in regards to nutrition and healthy life choices, there are a couple of thoughts that I had at the end of the unit. Just wanted to share them with anyone interested.

There are many reasons that we are doing this assignment and so that you have a complete understanding here are a couple of reasons:

  1. So what are wearable and app roles in health? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that during March, which is the National Nutrition Month we need to make “informed food choices and develop sound eating habits and physical activity habits.” It’s not always easy, I get that, but it IS important. What you eat and how much of it you eat directly relates to your personal health and well being. Any teacher knows the information a teacher is taught one day may “just disappear,” so with that in mind I offer you one piece of advice...TRACK IT! Apps are making not only tracking our overall intake of calories, but also our output. As a student of life, you need to take small steps to incorporating this into your life. That is EXACTLY what this assignment is guiding you to understand. Apps make this easy for you and so can wearables.

  2. Wearables such as Apple Watches, Fitbits and Up Bands are no longer restricted to the higher socioeconomic class. Wearables are becoming more affordable for EVERYONE, from adults all the way down to children. Just the other day, not only one month after the Apple Watch was released a student of mine had it on his wrist and was already utilizing the health tracker built in. This amazing technology is not going to be the oddity anymore, it’s going to become the norm!

  3. A recent article from wired magazine has highlighted several points about why wearable tech will be so prevalent in the future.

    1. Wearables will start to become invisible and seamless. They will be part of our everyday devices, not something that takes thought to wear or sync. The Apple Watch is already a step up from the Jawbone UP band. Not only is it a watch, something most people wear daily, but it automatically syncs with devices. Invisible beyond what a person is used to.

    2. Personalized and accurate can’t even begin to describe the research and data that goes into the numbers people are reading. Height, weight, age are not just numbers to your wearable, they create a profile that averages thousands of similar peoples’ data that will now make the most accurate estimation. Personalized you may ask, I think so!

    3. Efficient is always a hard thing to satisfy. What happens when you go on a week long trip in the mountains and want to record every step of the way your daily energy expense. I don’t want to be the Tech Titan, but get a Solar Charger! To be quite honest I had to get one quickly because of the remote parts of China I have travelled to. You never know when you’ll need a charge, being prepared is another Life Skill in itself.

    4. Regardless if you think wearables are a waste of time or just a marketing gimmick, you’ll have to take my opinion for what it’s worth. With the amount of deaths that happen because of heart related conditions and the entire world heading further and further into FAT dept, a wearable that could call for emergencies and is smart enough to recognize when your body is not reacting the way it should, could start to get EMS personnel on site faster which increases survival rate. Just knowing what you are doing to your body can start to help you make good lifestyle choices and if this assignment does that, then it’s served its purpose.

  4. It was touched on briefly, but the medical field is going to LOVE wearables in the future. These tools are going to help doctors achieve early diagnosis of many diseases such as congestive heart failure, identify conditions and habits of diabetes, improve management of neurodegenerative conditions and again as mentioned before alert emergency personnel to situations that render the victim unable to call for their own help. Applications are being developed and not only your nutrition can benefit from them, but your life!
